Literature as a tool? yes, for building people.

One good thing about reading books is the enormous variety of activities that we can do with our Students. Literature and EFL have been together for a long time, however, the objectives of reading literature have changed a lot. Instead of basically learning vocabulary and practising grammar, we now can explore the texts as a whole: the plot, the social enviroment behind it, characters… and with that,  promote discussions among students about vocabulary, attitudes, polemical subjects in the text in order to raise their crictical sense. This viewpoint has worked pretty good at the Int 1 level, which have been doing a good job with Wilde´s “the importance of being Earnest (reader)”.
